Please note that the Chief Inspector of the Department of Mineral Resources has published a new Guideline for a Mandatory Code of Practice (MCOP) in terms of Section 9 of the Mine Health and Safety Act.

By publishing the Guideline on the Prevention of Fires at Mines, an obligation in terms of Section 9(2) is placed on Employers to draft the corresponding Code of Practice. The MCOP should be seen as the latest in a line of MCOP’s dealing with emergencies, the prevention thereof as well as the responses thereto, including the MCOP on Risk Based Emergency Response. The MCOP applies to both surface and underground operations.
